An Unforgettable Night of Music, Dedication, and Community

An Unforgettable Night of Music, Dedication, and Community

An Unforgettable Night of Music, Dedication, and Community

Last week at Whitby Sports Club, we experienced a truly memorable evening as Brian Jones returned to the stage after a long hiatus. It was wonderful to see old friends and new faces gathered to enjoy a night of music that resonated deeply with everyone present.

We were fortunate to have an incredible lineup throughout the evening, with performances by musicians including John Finnon, Joe Topping, Gerry French, Alan Ainsworth, and Phil Chisnall, amongst others, each bringing their unique style to the stage.

Celebrating Ian Chesterman’s Legacy Through Music

The heart of the night, however, was the ‘big spot’ from Brian Jones and his son Andrew, who dedicated their performance to the late Ian Chesterman. Ian was a dear friend and a significant figure in our community, and his spirit was alive in every note played. Brian and Andrew delivered a heartfelt tribute with a set list that reflected Ian’s musical legacy:

 “Over The Moors,”

“After All These Years,”

“When The Liners Came Back To Liverpool,”

 “Friends You’ll Never Meet,”

 “All The Way From Australia,”

 “Amongst His Souvenirs,”

“No More Disasters Tonight,”

“Nice To Hear The Old Songs,”

 and “Like Old Friends.”

After a short break, they returned with the Jones family band to perform “No More Songs,” “Next Time Around,” and “Australia Bound.” The latter held particular significance as Andrew prepared to embark on an early morning flight to Australia, having spent the last few months back at home in the UK.

The evening was not only a celebration of music, but an opportunity to support Nightingale House Hospice, where Ian spent time. We were able to raise £355 for the hospice, and a staff member who attended the event shared a touching response:

“When I arrived yesterday evening, I knew I’d be experiencing a number of performances including yours. However, what I was unaware of was that you would be performing Ian’s songs and raising funds for our Hospice. I cannot express enough how beautiful yesterday evening was for me. On a personal and professional level (I may be back at the club trying to find my folk singing voice at some point). I have today, been left with a warm comforting and uplifting feeling hearing more of Ian’s music performed amazingly by yourself. I also feel incredibly overwhelmed and grateful that in doing so, you were and are continuing to support our hospices fundraising efforts…..thank you for ensuring Ian’s legacy lives on.”

Upcoming Tributes and Community Connections

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Angela and John Owen for organising this event. Their dedication made the night possible and memorable. We’re also looking forward to John’s upcoming podcast, which will offer more insights into our musical community.

Looking ahead, we invite you to join us for another tribute to Ian Chesterman at the Oswestry Folk Club on October 2nd. It promises to be another gathering filled with music and memories that honour a truly special friend and musician. Together, we continue to celebrate his music and the joy it brings to all of us.
