From the Archives: Johnny Cunningham Live at the Great American Music Hall

Openhouse Studio is proud to announce the release of a remarkable live recording from one of Scotland’s most beloved traditional musicians, Johnny Cunningham.

Captured live at San Francisco’s legendary Great American Music Hall in 1983, this newly unearthed concert recording offers listeners a rare opportunity to experience Johnny in a solo performance setting – something that few audiences were fortunate enough to witness.

For those who knew Johnny through his work with Silly Wizard, his extraordinary musicianship needs little introduction. Renowned for his dazzling fiddle playing, infectious energy and larger-than-life personality, Johnny left an indelible mark on traditional music on both sides of the Atlantic.

More than fifty years ago, during the recording sessions for what would become Silly Wizard’s first album in Edinburgh, a teenage Johnny Cunningham was already completely absorbed by music and fascinated by the possibilities of the recording studio. While the rest of the band took breaks between sessions, Johnny would quietly return to the studio to experiment on his own.

Without telling anyone else, he created a complex and mischievous version of the traditional tune The Fairy Dance. Though less than two minutes long, the recording featured multiple key changes, a minor variation of the melody, and extensive multi-tracking. When questioned about how long it had taken him to complete, Johnny revealed that he had recorded the first track too fast for himself and then spent the rest of the session trying to keep up with his own playing.

The story perfectly captures the spirit of a musician whose creativity, ambition and technical brilliance would define his career. As Gordon recalls, it was an early glimpse of the exceptional talent that would go on to captivate audiences around the world.

Silly Wizard would spend the next eighteen years touring internationally, becoming one of the most influential folk groups of their generation. During that time, Johnny relocated to the United States, where he built a highly successful musical career of his own. Yet despite his many collaborations and performances, opportunities to hear Johnny in a full solo concert setting remained rare.

That is what makes this newly discovered recording so special.

Recorded live at the Great American Music Hall in 1983, the concert captures Johnny at the height of his powers. His virtuosity, humour and deep connection to traditional music shine through in every performance, creating an intimate portrait of an artist who could command a stage entirely on his own.

Listening back today, more than four decades later, the recording feels as fresh and vibrant as ever. It is not only a celebration of Johnny’s extraordinary musicianship but also a precious reminder of the joy and energy he brought to everyone around him.
