WHEN LOVE LEFT TOWN
David Jones

She saw the stars as love arrived
She saw a full moon in the sky
When love arrived she was
Blind to all
The flaws that love can hide

She saw no malice in his face
She saw no darkness in his eyes
When love arrived she was
Oblivious
To all the warning signs

The first harsh words
He spoke
And then the blows

Too late
His true self
Hit her

She forgave him once
She forgave him twice
When he cried “sorry”

But again and again
His sorry words
And sorry deeds
Ran through her

Today the stars have faded
The moon has lost its grace
When love left town
Her body shrivelled
Now the only colours left for her
Are the bruises on her face
